The Tithorea – Domokos section represents one of the most technologically advanced and geographically challenging segments of the European High-Speed Railway Network. As a vital link in the Athens – Thessaloniki corridor, this 107 km double-track line was designed to redefine rail travel in Greece, bypassing the difficult mountainous crossing of Othris and Kallidromo with a modern, high-speed infrastructure.
NAMA was entrusted with the complex construction studies and the technical refinement of the project, ensuring that every kilometer of the alignment met the rigorous Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and Hellenic national standards. Our role was pivotal in harmonizing existing structures with new designs and navigating the intricate technical requirements of a project of this scale.
A Masterpiece of Railway Engineering and Infrastructure
The sheer volume of technical works required for this 107 km section highlights the project’s immense complexity:
- Strategic Tunnels and Crossings: Technical oversight of iconic structures, including the twin-bore Kallidromo Tunnel (9 km) and Othris Tunnel (7 km), along with 23 Cut & Cover sections and 46 railway bridges.
- Advanced Track Alignment: Elaboration of the detailed final alignment for the 107 km double track, including precision adaptation to as-built structures and the integration of 5 railway stations and 2 railway stops.
- Station and Hub Design: Comprehensive final design for station layouts and construction phase planning for three stations remaining in active operation, ensuring seamless service during implementation.
- Interdisciplinary Coordination: Harmonizing the complex interfaces between track alignment, structural engineering, and hydraulic designs to ensure a unified and resilient infrastructure.
Technical Expertise and Integrated Solutions
NAMA provided a wide array of specialized engineering services to address the project’s multifaceted challenges:
- Structural and Geotechnical Excellence: Detailed final design for new Cut & Cover structures and retaining walls, supported by extensive geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing to secure stable foundations in varying terrains.
- Hydraulic and Road Design: Delivery of final hydraulic studies for stations and rail sections, alongside the design of 40 km of adjacent road networks, including comprehensive safety and signage studies.
- Strategic Conflict Resolution: Resolving critical technical overlaps with other major infrastructure, such as the E65 motorway, and designing temporary rail connections to facilitate the transition between existing and new networks.
- Safety and Interoperability: Preparation of the project-wide Safety Plan and the meticulous adjustment of all technical specifications to comply with the latest European and National rail standards.
Driving the Future of Sustainable Transport
The completion of the Tithorea – Domokos high-speed line is a landmark achievement that significantly reduces travel times and enhances the capacity of the Greek rail network. By delivering precision-engineered solutions for such a monumental project, NAMA has demonstrated its capacity to lead the most demanding railway developments in the European market.
For NAMA, this project serves as a testament to our commitment to engineering excellence, supporting the transition toward a faster, safer, and more sustainable future for national and international transport.
