Gaborone Western Bypass

Africa, 2023

Completed for ministry of transport and communication of the republic of botswana

The Western Bypass in Gaborone is a critical arterial road that facilitates both local urban movement and regional transit across Botswana. To address the significant traffic congestion and safety concerns at three of its busiest junctions, the Government of Botswana initiated the development of grade-separated intersections (interchanges). NAMA provided comprehensive consulting services, guiding the project from its conceptual origins through to construction supervision.

This infrastructure transformation is a key component of the Gaborone Transport Master Plan, aimed at modernizing the capital's road network to support its growing population and economic activity.

Comprehensive Engineering and Project Management Lifecycle

NAMA’s involvement in this international project showcased the firm’s ability to manage complex transport infrastructure in diverse geographical environments. The scope of services included:

  • Conceptual and Preliminary Design: Developing the architectural and engineering vision for the interchanges at the intersections of KT Motsete Drive (Western Bypass) with Lobatse Road, Willie Seboni Road, and Kudumatse Drive.
  • Bidding Documents and Procurement: Preparing detailed technical specifications and bidding documents to ensure a transparent and high-quality contractor selection process.
  • Tender Assistance: Providing expert technical support to the client during the evaluation and selection of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractor.
  • Construction Supervision and Monitoring: Overseeing the installation and construction phases to ensure strict adherence to safety standards, material quality, and design specifications.
  • Defects Liability Oversight: Managing the project through the handover phase and the defects liability period to guarantee long-term structural integrity.

Strategic Impact on Gaborone’s Traffic Flow

The implementation of grade separation (replacing traditional roundabouts or signalized junctions with bridges and ramps) provides several transformative benefits for the city:

  • Elimination of Bottlenecks: By allowing traffic on the Western Bypass to flow uninterrupted by cross-traffic, the project drastically reduces travel times during peak hours.
  • Enhanced Road Safety: Grade separation minimizes the "conflict points" where accidents typically occur, significantly improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
  • Regional Logistics: As part of a major transit corridor, these improvements facilitate the faster movement of goods and freight between Gaborone and neighboring regions, supporting Botswana’s role in regional trade.
  • Economic Growth: Reduced congestion lowers vehicle operating costs and improves the overall efficiency of the city’s economic hub.

For NAMA, the Botswana Western Bypass project stands as a testament to our international reach and expertise in transport engineering. By delivering a holistic suite of services—from design to final supervision—we helped create a safer and more efficient transport backbone for Botswana’s capital.
