The restoration of the Athens Tramway marked a historic shift in the capital’s transportation landscape, returning a beloved transit mode to the city after its abolition in 1955. Reintroduced in July 2004 to meet the demanding logistical needs of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, the project represented the first modern, comprehensive light rail system ever designed in Greece.
NAMA was entrusted by the construction joint venture with the vast majority of the technical design, serving as the lead consultant for all core engineering disciplines. Navigating the complexities of a dense urban environment and a sensitive coastal zone, our team transformed a 26-kilometer corridor into a high-performance transit network.
Comprehensive Engineering in a Living City
The project’s scope required a sophisticated integration of multiple engineering fields to ensure the tramway functioned seamlessly alongside existing city infrastructure:
- Railway Engineering and Geometry: Design of 26 kilometers of double-track lines and 47 modern stations, including terminals and system extensions, optimized for urban flow.
- Structural Engineering: Design of specialized bridges, steel structures, and pedestrian crossings that defined the line’s architectural resilience.
- Traffic and Mobility Studies: Advanced modeling to integrate the tramway into Athens’ busiest arterial roads, balancing rail priority with road traffic efficiency.
- Hydraulic Infrastructure and Utilities: A complete redesign of stormwater management, sewerage, and water supply systems along the entire route to prevent flooding and ensure urban resilience.
- Depot and Maintenance Facilities: Full technical design of a massive 70-acre maintenance and storage depot, the heart of the network’s operations.
