Athens Tram Extension to Piraeus

Greece, 2007

Completed for tram sa

The extension of the Athens Tram network to the city and port of Piraeus is a transformative infrastructure project that bridges the capital's coastal zone with Greece's largest maritime hub. By extending the network from the Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) into the heart of Piraeus, the project provides a vital, sustainable transport link that alleviates urban congestion and promotes the regeneration of historic urban areas.

NAMA played a leading role as the primary engineering consultant, delivering the full spectrum of detailed studies and technical designs required to integrate a modern tram system into one of the most densely populated and historically sensitive urban environments in Europe.

Multi-Disciplinary Engineering and Urban Integration

The Piraeus extension was more than a rail project; it was a complex urban redevelopment exercise. NAMA’s comprehensive scope of services included:

  • Detailed Track Alignment: Designing a 5.4 km single-loop extension that navigates the narrow, high-traffic streets of Piraeus, ensuring seamless integration with existing road networks.
  • E/M and Systems Engineering: Completing the final detailed study for Electromechanical (E/M) installations, including power supply, signaling, and overhead catenary systems.
  • Structural Design for Infrastructure: Providing structural studies for the track slabs, new depot facilities, and modern rest areas for staff and passengers.
  • Hydraulic and Geotechnical Engineering: Executing critical drainage studies to prevent urban flooding and geotechnical investigations along the entire route to ensure soil stability for the rail infrastructure.
  • Urban Planning and Topography: Delivering final detailed urban planning studies to transform the aesthetic and functional character of the streets through which the tram passes.
  • Future Expansion Planning: Executing preliminary studies for further extensions toward the historic neighborhoods of Chatzikyriakeio and Freatida.

Key Figures and Strategic Impact

The arrival of the Tram in Piraeus has fundamentally reshaped the city’s mobility profile:

  • Network Reach: The extension adds 5.4 km of track and 12 modern, accessible stations to the network, creating a direct link from the Piraeus Port to the neighborhoods of Glyfada and Voula.
  • Traffic Reduction: The project is estimated to reduce the number of private vehicles entering central Piraeus by approximately 15,000 per day, significantly lowering CO2 emissions.
  • Intermodal Connectivity: The Tram creates a powerful transport hub by connecting with Metro Line 1 (Piraeus Station), Metro Line 3 (Dimotiko Theatro), and the Suburban Railway (Proastiakos).
  • Urban Regeneration: Beyond transport, the project included the bioclimatic upgrade of streets and the planting of over 1,000 trees, creating "green corridors" that lower the urban heat island effect.

For NAMA, the Piraeus Tram Extension stands as a testament to our ability to coordinate a vast array of stakeholders and technical disciplines. By delivering high-precision engineering and visionary urban design, we helped create a cleaner, faster, and more beautiful Piraeus for residents and travelers alike.
