The Athens Metro is one of the most significant and complex infrastructure projects in Greece, fundamentally transforming the daily life of millions in the capital. NAMA has been a long-standing strategic partner in this evolution, providing high-level technical consultancy and engineering expertise for the expansion of existing lines and the realization of new, state-of-the-art additions to the network.
Through a multi-year framework, NAMA provides a specialized team of experts covering every facet of metro development, from tunneling and structural engineering to the most advanced electronic signaling and power supply systems.
A Multidisciplinary Technical Framework
NAMA’s role spans the entire lifecycle of the Athens Metro works, ensuring that international best practices are utilized to optimize construction costs and operational efficiency:
- Technical Consultancy and Design: Participation in the detailed design and tendering process for new extensions and lines, ensuring they meet the highest global standards for urban rail.
- Specialized Engineering Expertise: Provision of experts in tunneling (utilizing TBM-EPB and NATM methods), civil works, and complex electromechanical (E/M) systems including ventilation, power supply, and telecommunications.
- Signaling and Control Systems: Implementation of advanced train control systems, such as Automatic Train Control (ATC) and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), to ensure passenger safety and maximize network capacity.
- Supervision and Commissioning: Comprehensive oversight during construction, testing, and the final setting-up of operations to ensure seamless project delivery.
- Knowledge Transfer: Training of the operator’s staff in the application of simulation programs for E/M systems, empowering the local workforce with modern technological tools.
Tackling the Traffic Challenge: The Impact of Line 4
Beyond the ongoing extensions of Line 2 and Line 3, the current focus is the construction of the revolutionary Line 4 (the "Orange Line"). This project is specifically designed to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion in the Greater Athens Area:
- Reducing Carbon Footprint: The new line is expected to take approximately 53,000 cars off the road daily, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and urban noise.
- Connecting Underserved Areas: By linking densely populated neighborhoods like Galatsi, Kypseli, and Zografou with the center, it provides a fast and reliable alternative to private vehicles.
- Efficiency and Time Savings: Line 4 will serve an estimated 340,000 passengers daily, drastically reducing travel times between the suburbs and the metropolitan core.
- Enhancing the Existing Network: The new line will create critical transfer hubs, increasing the overall flexibility and resilience of the entire public transport system.
For NAMA, the Athens Metro project represents a commitment to sustainable urban development. By providing the technical backbone for these expansions, we are helping to create a faster, cleaner, and more efficient Athens for generations to come.
