Development of 7 Greek Regional Airports

Greece, 2016

Completed for fraport regional airports of greece management company sa

The modernization of Greece’s regional airports stands as one of the most significant infrastructure upgrade programs in the country’s recent history. NAMA played a pivotal role as a lead consultant for Cluster A, which includes seven key airports that serve as vital entry points for millions of international tourists annually. The project aimed to transform aging facilities into world-class aviation hubs, enhancing the travel experience while meeting stringent international safety and operational standards.

  • The seven airports included in this strategic cluster are:
  • Thessaloniki (SKG) – The "Makedonia" Airport, the cluster's largest hub.
  • Kavala (KVA)
  • Aktio (PVK)
  • Kerkira/Corfu (CFU)
  • Zakynthos (ZTH)
  • Kefallinia (EFL)
  • Chania (CHQ)

Comprehensive Consultancy and Engineering Lifecycle

NAMA’s involvement was critical in the transition of these airports into a new era of private management and upgraded services. The scope of work required a meticulous multidisciplinary approach:

  • Condition Assessment: A thorough evaluation of the existing state of all airport buildings, runways, and airside/landside infrastructure to identify immediate and long-term needs.
  • Strategic Conceptual & Basic Design: Developing the architectural and engineering vision for the expansion of terminal buildings and the refurbishment of existing facilities to handle increased passenger traffic. Including new aprons, taxiways and runway extensions.
  • EPC Tender Preparation: Drafting the detailed Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tender documents, ensuring that the technical specifications met the high benchmarks set by the Hellenic Republic and international investors.
  • Infrastructure Refurbishment: Designing the modernization of essential systems, including electromechanical installations, baggage handling, and security checkpoints.

Impact on National Tourism and Connectivity

The successful completion of these designs facilitated a massive investment program across the regional network. For Cluster A, the results included the construction of new terminals—most notably at Thessaloniki—and a significant increase in total floor space and check-in capacity across the islands and the mainland. These upgrades have drastically improved the operational efficiency of the airports, reduced seasonal bottlenecks, and strengthened Greece's position as a premier global destination.

For NAMA, this project highlights our ability to manage complex, multi-site infrastructure programs and our expertise in aviation engineering, contributing to the sustainable growth of the Greek economy and its transport network.
