As the lead consultant for this strategic component of the Botswana Integrated Transport Project (BITP), NAMA is driving a transformative initiative to modernize the transportation landscape of Gaborone. Funded by the World Bank, this high-stakes project aims to elevate the efficiency of the capital’s transport system and sharpen the competitiveness of its transit services through cutting-edge technological integration and institutional capacity building.
The cornerstone of the project is the implementation of a sophisticated Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) system. This intelligent infrastructure is designed to harmonize intersection operations and drastically improve urban traffic flow, while simultaneously providing real-time priority to public transport and optimizing transit routing.
Strategic Consultancy and Engineering Lifecycle
NAMA’s involvement extends across the entire project lifecycle, ensuring that the transition to a digital traffic management era is backed by rigorous scientific analysis and administrative excellence:
- Comprehensive Data and Analysis: Execution of large-scale surveys, traffic flow analyses, and technical feasibility studies to provide the geodata and metrics required for the CTC system.
- Technical Design and Procurement: Development of detailed technical specifications and robust tender documentation to secure international-standard technology and infrastructure.
- Institutional Empowerment: Building modern business capacity within public administration to ensure the long-term sustainability of the city's transport evolution.
- Implementation and Supervision: Providing expert support throughout the procurement phase and maintaining rigorous oversight during the construction and deployment of the system.
- Operational Support and Handover: Delivery of continuous consultancy services during a three-year operation and maintenance period, ensuring a seamless transition and full system integration before final handover to the responsible national agency.
Engineering Global Solutions for Urban Competitiveness
By empowering private sector participation and improving critical inter-regional infrastructure, the Gaborone project serves as a blueprint for sustainable urban development in emerging markets. The integration of centralized control with public transport priority systems marks a significant leap forward in Gaborone’s journey toward becoming a resilient, smart city.
For NAMA, this project underscores our capacity to lead complex, World Bank-funded international contracts. It highlights our ability to export high-level technical expertise and manage large-scale digital transformations that foster economic growth and improve the daily lives of citizens across the globe.
