Rethink Athens: Towards a New City Center

NAMA was a key member of the multidisciplinary design team for "Rethink Athens," a landmark urban regeneration project aimed at transforming the heart of the Greek capital. This ambitious initiative, centered on the pedestrianization of Panepistimiou Street, sought to redefine the relationship between the city’s residents and its historic public spaces through sustainable transport and innovative environmental design.

As part of the technical team, NAMA delivered specialized engineering solutions required to turn this architectural vision into a functional reality.

Engineering the Sustainable City

The project involved a comprehensive reorganization of the city's central axis, spanning approximately 3 kilometers from Amalias Avenue to the Archaeological Museum on Patission Street. NAMA’s contributions focused on critical technical pillars:

  • Strategic Transport Studies (TRAM Design): NAMA executed the transport and track design for the new tram line extension. This line was designed to connect the existing network at Syntagma Square, running along the pedestrianized Panepistimiou axis toward Omonia and Patission, introducing an eco-friendly transport alternative to the city center.
  • Structural Engineering: Our team provided structural studies for the project's complex interventions, ensuring the integrity of new surface layouts and supporting infrastructure within a dense urban fabric.
  • Hydraulic Engineering and Flood Protection: NAMA developed detailed hydraulic studies to manage urban runoff. This included innovative flood protection designs integrated with sustainable water management systems to capture and reuse rainwater.
  • Pedestrian-First Design: The project aimed to remove vehicle traffic from Panepistimiou Street, reclaiming thousands of square meters of public space for pedestrians and cyclists, supported by NAMA's technical verification of the new traffic flows.

Impact and Vision for Resilience

"Rethink Athens" was designed not just as a facelift, but as a holistic environmental intervention. Key goals included:

  • Urban Cooling: Strategic tree planting and the use of "cool" materials aimed to reduce local temperatures by up to 2°C, mitigating the urban heat island effect.
  • Cultural Connectivity: Linking major archaeological sites and museums through a continuous, walkable green corridor.
  • Economic Revitalization: Activating vacant buildings and encouraging a vibrant street-level economy through increased foot traffic and public gatherings.

For NAMA, "Rethink Athens" stands as a flagship project in urban resilience. It demonstrates our ability to solve complex infrastructure challenges—from tramway engineering to advanced flood protection—while contributing to a future-ready, sustainable urban environment.
